On June 10, the 2026 International Industry-University-Research-Application Cooperation Conference (Northeast China’s Three Provinces and One Region) Mine Geological Hazard Control and Ecological Environment Restoration Seminar & Northern Environment Forum opened in Shenyang, Liaoning. The conference was co-hosted by Liaoning University (LNU) and the Liaoning Provincial Society for Environmental Sciences and served as an important sub-forum of the 3rd Liaoning International Friendship Cities Conference. Pan Yishan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Secretary of the CPC Committee of LNU; Zhang Hong, Second-Level Inspector of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Education; and Zhao Hongbin, Deputy Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office of the People’s Government of Liaoning Province, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. The ceremony was chaired by Huo Chunhui, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee and Vice President of LNU, and Chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Society for Environmental Sciences.

More than 200 academicians, experts, university scholars, and industry representatives from China, Singapore, Japan, Ireland, Russia, France, the Republic of Korea, and other countries gathered to explore new pathways for mine safety governance, ecological restoration, and green low-carbon development under the theme “Environmental and Ecological Security and Green Mines: Innovation, Integration, and Collaboration”.

In his remarks, Pan Yishan noted that mine geological hazard control and ecological environment restoration are concrete actions to study and implement the guiding principles of the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, serve the full revitalization of northeast China, and contribute to building a Beautiful China. As a national Double First-Class university, LNU has upheld the “Three Go’s” educational philosophy: “go beyond the campus to seek social scenarios, go into society to identify real problems, and go to the frontier to pursue practical innovation”. Relying on platforms such as key laboratories of the National Mine Safety Administration, the university has advanced organized research, strengthened key technological breakthroughs, and built a distinctive disciplinary system in disaster rock mechanics, ecological restoration, and related fields. He said the university will continue to shift mine disaster prevention and control from passive treatment to active early warning, and ecological restoration from end-of-pipe treatment to life-cycle management, contributing “LNU wisdom” and “LNU solutions” to solving real, hard, and major problems in mine safety and ecological environment.

Zhang Hong said that mine geological hazard control and ecological environment restoration are a key lever for building a modern industrial system with distinctive strengths in Northeast China and achieving new breakthroughs in the full revitalization of northeast China in the new era. He fully recognized LNU’s disciplinary foundation and research achievements in environmental science, geological hazard prevention and control, and ecological restoration, and expressed hope that all parties would promote cross-sector integration of frontier technologies, deepen coordinated industry-university-research-application collaboration, improve the quality and effectiveness of discipline development and talent training, and jointly provide solid support for the green transformation of the mining sector and ecological security in Northeast China’s three provinces and one region.

Zhao Hongbin said that the Liaoning International Friendship Cities Conference is an important platform for Liaoning to conduct international exchanges and deepen practical cooperation. The sub-forum has opened new areas and enriched the substance of friendship-city cooperation. He expressed hope that all parties would rely on friendship-city cooperation mechanisms to further deepen international science and technology exchanges, broaden areas of cooperation among friendship cities, promote precise industry-university-research-application matching, accelerate the commercialization and application of scientific and technological achievements, and make ecological and environmental protection a new highlight of external cooperation. The Provincial Foreign Affairs Office will continue to provide service support and fully support universities in Liaoning in deepening international exchanges and cooperation.

With a strong lineup, the conference brought together global innovation resources and aligned closely with international research frontiers. Leading experts from China and abroad attended, including Peng Suping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Peng Jianbing and Zhao Yangsheng, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zhou Yingxin, Fellow of the Academy of Engineering, Singapore; Chen Guangqi, Fellow of the Engineering Academy of Japan; and Zhan Xinmin, Fellow of the Irish Academy of Engineering. Renowned scholars from the Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Mining and Technology, and Jiangnan University, as well as scholars from Far Eastern Federal University, Nanyang Technological University, the University of Utah, the University of Galway, and other leading overseas institutions, shared their latest research findings and engineering experience in areas such as mine geological hazard prevention and control, heavy metal pollution remediation, carbon sink enhancement, smart monitoring, and digital twins.

The conference also featured a Graduate Student Youth Forum, providing a high-quality platform for young researchers to present their work and engage in academic exchange, and fully demonstrating the conference’s strong emphasis on cultivating young talent. Participants held in-depth academic discussions and exchanged research ideas, further deepening their understanding of key frontier scientific issues and identifying new cooperation opportunities in technological innovation, research commercialization, and industrial collaboration.

The International Industry-University-Research-Application Cooperation Conference (Northeast China’s Three Provinces and One Region), together with the Northern Environment Forum and the mining-themed seminar, has been successfully held for two consecutive years. It has become a highly influential branded academic event in the field of ecological environment in Northeast China’s three provinces and one region and mine safety, and has built a high-quality scientific and technological innovation platform for strengthening northern China’s ecological security barrier and steadily promoting green mine construction. This year’s conference deepened cross-regional and cross-border collaborative innovation, smoothed channels for the deep integration of the innovation chain, industrial chain, and talent chain, strengthened Liaoning’s international science and technology cooperation and practical engagement with friendship cities, and injected new momentum from sci-tech innovation into the full revitalization of northeast China and the building of Beautiful China.
