Abstract:
Education is an important social resource, education not only creates opportunities for personal development, but also has profound and far-reaching significance for accelerating China's economic development, accelerating social progress and helping the nation's rejuvenation. The level of personal education has become a key factor to affect the size of social mobility, and it is also closely related to the level of parental education. An important reason for the unbalanced development of educational opportunities and the uneven distribution of educational resources is the intergenerational transmission of education. The smaller the intergenerational transmission effect of education, the more open the society, the higher the mobility of classes, and the more beneficial to the harmonious and stable development of the society. At the present time, the intergenerational transmission of education in the theoretical and empirical study at home and abroad have obtained some achievements, A high correlation on the level of education between children and parents have been confirmed by most researches. This paper bases on the data of the 2018 Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) studying the intergenerational transmission of education in rural China. This paper selects a sample of household registration in rural areas, and then uses the years of education of the father and mother to replace the education level of the parents, and uses the family social status of the children at the age of 14 to measure the family background of the children, then add personal characteristics of age and gender, parents' political affiliation and parents' occupation type at the age of 14 to analyze he influence of parent's family background, occupation and other influencing factors on children's education level. This paper firstly sorts out the relevant theories related to intergenerational transmission in education; Secondly, carry out OLS regression analysis according to the theory of intergenerational transmission of education, and carry out Probit regression analysis on the probability of children's schooling opportunities at different stages of parents' educational level; then use a sample of married or cohabiting spouses to test the regression results' robustness of the paper, and further analyze the gender and regional heterogeneity in the intergenerational transmission of education in rural China; finally, the paper summarizes the research results and put forward some policy suggestions. The research demonstrates that the intergenerational transmission effect of education in rural areas in my country still exists. First, the education levels of both fathers and mothers have a significant positive impact on the education levels of offspring, and the intergenerational transmission effect of education for fathers is significantly greater than that for mothers, at the same time, children's school attendance at various stages is also affected by the different educational levels of their fathers and mothers; second, the improvement of family social status has a significant positive impact on the education level of offspring; third, in terms of children's gender differences, the educational level of the parents has obviously different effects on boys' educational level and girls' educational level, this difference is also reflected in the children's schooling at various stages of admission; fourth, the intergenerational transmission effect showed obvious heterogeneity in the eastern, central and western regions.
